“Making Dolls and Creatures”: uma crítica / a review

Olá a todos! Esta é a minha primeira crítica a livros. Ultimamente, tenho coleccionado imensos livros de “crafts” e estes têm-me ajudado imenso a melhorar as minhas técnicas.

Tenho a certeza que me vou divertir imenso a usar estes padrões!

Please read this very carefully before reading any of my reviews.

I only review books I have or that I bought to others. So, the pictures I you have here of the books are taken with my books. I am not paid to make this reviews or anything, I make them because I like (or dislike) the books and I think it is important to share my opinion about them.
I hope you’ll enjoy!

Hello to you all! This is my very first book review. I have been acquiring a lot of books recently and that has been helping me a lot with my crafts. Tutorials, inspiration, ideas… You name it! There is a lot you can find in this type of books, even if you are not a person that likes to do the “handmade”. They are “comfort books”, like I love to call them.

This one, “Making Dolls andCreatures” by Ruth Sleigh-Johnson is a real treat.
If you are looking for the cutie softy type of books, this is not it. This is a really wonderful book about all type of dolls and creatures, with an artsy edge to it. What I love the most about the book is that it is not just tutorials and patterns to follow, but also about some very interesting artists, I mean, I don’t what just the tutorials, I want the real deal with new artists and new influences that make it all different and worth to take a look.

One of these wonderful artists is Rita Pinheiro, from the blog Matilde Beldroega which is one of my all-time favorites. I actually acquired the book because I knew there was something about her in there. And I am very glad I have it.

The tutorials are actually pretty easy and there are very different ideas in the book, and this is what I love; there is no specific theme, all the dolls are very different, with different materials and different concepts. I love it. Some of them aren’t even my type of dolls, but it is always interesting to widen my horizons and explore new things. So in the end, I think this is a great book if you want to explore and make! I am sure I will have lots of fun trying to use the tutorials!

  1. Hey, that's fantastic that you wrote it out of your own free will! It would be awesome though if someone would like to pay for reviews, myself I wouldn't reject it :D I love the pictures from this book, are you going to create some dolls like those? I can't wait to see!

    1. Hi Kasia! The thing about paid reviews is that sometimes people go and say "oh this is a lovelly book" just because they are paid to do so. Of course I would love to get books to review but I also love independent reviews, they are the real deal ;)

  2. That book looks so lovely! I love that little doll in the picture, so cute!

I took those pictures on my post using Instagram, for iphone. I agree with you, they look like lomo pictures. I cut the borders of them and put a frame on, so lets keep the secret and pretend I took them professionally and not with my iphone!

    1. Oh and wow! 27 degrees! That would be so lovely! It's pretty grey and cloudy here but we have had some sunny days too. I'd like to come and spend some time in 27 degrees though :D

  3. Hey Sara, Hope you're well! This book looks right up my street, thank you for introducing it to me! I've added it to my ever growing Amazon wish list.

The little fairies you commented on are from the Happyland collection at the Early Learning Centre.

  4. Oh, the dolls are so cute! Thanks for the review. I've never really made any, except for some weird demon-plushie my cats ate anyway. I usually make clothes, since I'm so vain XD.
